GALLERY OF CONTEMPORARY ART

The Gallery of Contemporary Art is a place for the presentation and promotion of various fields, phenomena, and trends in the latest art, as well as creative personalities. It is involved in organizing exhibitions, cultural education, publishing publications, and collecting museum collectibles. 

It was created in 1992 as a result of the merger with the Museum of the Bureau of Art Exhibitions in Lomza, which from 1975 to 1992 was located at 19 Polowa Street and conducted activities in the field of dissemination of professional art in Lomza and the region. 

The first head of the institution was the artist Jerzy Swoiński (from 1974 to 1977). He was followed by Andrzej Szufarski (from 1977 to 1983), and since 1984 – Karolina Skłodowska.

Over the past half-century

the Bureau of Artistic Exhibitions and the gallery have presented the work of several hundred artists, including:

Stanisław Baj, Janusz Bałdyga, Rafał Borcz, Piotr Bujnowicz, Bronisław Chromy, Małgorzata Dmitruk, Jan Dobkowski, Stanisław Dróżdż, Marita Benke-Gajda, Józef Gielniak, Ryszard Gieryszewski, Piotr Grabowski, Kazimierz Kalkowski, Adam Kilian, Ireneusz Kulik, Zbigniew Lengren, Ludwik Maciąg, Franciszek Maśluszczak, Stanisław Mazuś, Leszek Mądzik, Andrzej Mleczko, Elżbieta and Marian Murawscy, Nikifor, Paweł Pierściński, Henryk Rogoziński, Tadeusz Siara, Andrzej Strumiłło, Henryk Albin Tomaszewski, Tadeusz Walter, Henryk Wańko, Magdalena Winiarska-Gotowska, Bronisław Wolanin, Wiktor Wołkow, Ewa and Adam Wsiołkowscy, Krystyna Zachwatowicz-Wajda, Andrzej Zwolak.

A total of 500 exhibitions were held,

over 100 of which presenting the achievements of Lomża artists. The most important collective exhibition of the local community remains the "Artistic Work of the Year" organized in the years 1983-1998.

Numerous exhibitions, especially interdisciplinary ones, were organized in cooperation with museums and galleries, as well as universities and associations, including the "Ostrołęka" Gallery, the "Test" Gallery in Warsaw, the Bureau of Art Exhibitions and the District Museum in Suwałki, the Academy of Fine Arts in Łódź and Krakow, the Stanisław Zagórski Social Press Association "Stopka" in Łomża, the "Ceramics Without Borders" Association, and the Cepelia Polska Sztuka i Rękodzieło Foundation in Warsaw.

The exhibition activity is accompanied by author's meetings, multimedia activities, book promotions, and art lessons and workshops conducted with various groups of recipients. The author's classes by Natalia Tułowiecka ("ARTing") and Ivaylo Roszak (Aesthetics and Creativity Course) are very popular.

The gallery also publishes publications accompanying the exhibitions.

In the archive, there are over two thousand invitations, catalogs, folders, posters, and postcards. 

An important part of the activity is the collection of museum collectible items. The collectibles currently include nearly 1,100 objects. Most of them were created in the years 1960-2019, 35 graphics and paintings come from the early 20th century and pre-war years. Among the authors are Jan Dobkowski, Stanisław Ostoja-Chrostowski, Edward Dwurnik, Halina and Janusz Eysymont, Marita Benke-Gajda, Ryszard Gieryszewski, Jerzy Wit Majewski, Franciszek Maśluszczak, Henryk Okuniewski, Hieronim Skurpski, Andrzej Strumiłło, Henryk Albin Tomaszewski, Henryk Waniek, Leon Wyczółkowski and over 100 others. 

The most numerous set, 450 linocuts and woodcuts, consists of graphic miniatures and ex-libris by Tadeusz Roman Żurowski. 

Two author's collections were created from the donations of Marita Benke-Gajda (ceramics) and Halina Esymont (oil paintings and pastels). 

The gallery also has the largest collection of works by Łomża authors, which includes nearly 300 paintings, watercolors, drawings, stained glass, sculptures, and medals. 

Over the years, the gallery has become an integral part of the cultural landscape of the city and the region, becoming an important center for the dissemination of contemporary art.
